Website Building General

What is AMP (Accelerated Mobile Pages) and should I use it?

AMP is a Google-backed framework for creating stripped-down, fast-loading mobile web pages that load nearly instantly by restricting JavaScript and using Google's caching. AMP pages were featured in Google's Top Stories carousel with a lightning bolt icon. However, Google removed the AMP requirement for Top Stories in June 2021 — any fast page meeting Core Web Vitals now qualifies, not just AMP pages. Current recommendation: AMP is generally NOT recommended for most websites in 2024. Reasons: AMP restrictions limit functionality (no custom JavaScript, complex forms), AMP URLs (Google cache URLs) create tracking and branding issues, and modern optimization (LiteSpeed Cache + WebP + Cloudflare CDN) achieves similar page speed without AMP limitations. Exception: high-volume news sites that already implement AMP and see Google Discover traffic from it may continue. For new sites: focus on Core Web Vitals optimization instead of AMP implementation.
