What is a multisite WordPress network and when should I use it?

WordPress Multisite is a network of multiple websites controlled from a single WordPress installation and admin dashboard. All sites share the same WordPress core files, themes, and plugins — one update applies everywhere. Use cases: university with department websites (english.uni.edu, science.uni.edu), news network with regional editions, web agency managing 50+ client WordPress sites, or e-commerce network with country-specific stores. Enable in wp-config.php: add define('WP_ALLOW_MULTISITE', true); then run the network setup at wp-admin > Network Setup. Each site in the network gets its own database tables (prefixed separately), upload directory, and admin users. Subdomain network (site1.yourdomain.com) requires wildcard DNS (*.yourdomain.com A record). Subdirectory network (yourdomain.com/site1) works without special DNS.
